The full moon in Libra coming up has me thinking about relationships, which, in the context of witchcraft, tends to bring up love spells. The Love Spell is a hot topic in the witchcraft community and sure to get the socials buzzing if you bring it up in public. But, like everything, love spells aren’t black and white. And what they are and how they act, has a lot to do with definitions and what you are really looking for in a relationship.
Looking at love spells from the Libra perspective illustrates a more nuanced view. Libra is about partnerships, about balance. When you are looking at a relationship through Libra’s lens, you’re looking for a partner. You’re not looking to be completed, or for someone to slake your lust on. (Although that could be a fun bonus.) You are looking for that special person that shares your interests and goals. You’re looking for an equal, not a plaything. Someone who isn’t just going to be fun to be around, but who is going to push you to be a better person while also striving to be better for you. Not someone to make you feel good. Not someone to pick up your pieces. Someone to stand beside.
At this point it occurs to me to point out that this person doesn’t have to be a romantic partner. You don’t have to have sex with them, or even find them physically attractive. They could be a friend, a business partner, or a hiking buddy. There could be many people who fit this role in different areas of your life. Maybe it’s another mom you share childcare with. Or another student where you attend school who is willing to tutor you in math in exchange for your constructive criticism of their essays. These relationships represent equal exchanges that benefit both parties.
Finding this person involves making space for them in your life and putting the word out to the Universe that you’re looking. It’s as simple as that. Nobody’s free will is being infringed upon. There is the possibility that the person who steps into the space you have creative isn’t someone you would have chosen if you had the choice of everyone in the whole world, but, frankly, you don’t. And if you really don’t like them, tell them no and try again.
A Candle in the Window
The idea of the candle in the window comes from traditions of various cultures indicating that the occupant is ready for courting. Is in the market, as it were. Courting candles come to mind immediately, these set a limit to the amount of time that could be spent courting, and the old pot of basil. I propose, that for this spell, we place an item in the window to represent not jut that we have a space open in our life for another person, but what sort of person you are looking for.
Using a candle with simple candle magick techniques is the simplest way, but it may not be the most practical. If do put a candle in the window, I recommend using a hurricane candlestick holder to protect your curtains from your candle. It is my humble opinion that any candle-burning witch should invest in a set.
If you have no intention of leaving a flame on your windowsill, feel free to use an electric light, flashlight or flameless candle. I am a big fan of a long-handled, heavy duty aluminum flashlight. It stands up on its end with minimal assistance, a toilet paper roll fits nicely over the handle for drawing sigils on and is a comforting weight in the hand when you’re out in the woods wondering if that’s a man or a bear moving about over there.
This spell should be begun shortly before moonrise on night of the the Libra full moon (That’s going to be about 8ish PM EST but check your local listings for the year) so that the light source is already in the window when the moon appears in the sky. If the full moon isn’t anytime soon, the waxing moon is also good. I recommend the Daff Moon app to sort all this out.
You Will Need
A Candle. White, or a color appropriate to the role you wish to fill in your life.
Something with which to carve the candle.
Paper (preferably your journal) and pen
Dressing oil appropriate to your purpose. I like a basil base for harmonious relationships.
Begin the Ceremony
Prepare yourself and your space for magick in whatever way is appropriate for your tradition.
On a clean page in your journal write “My partner in (whatever) stands beside me” Say it out loud.
Spend some time using whatever method you like best to create a sigil based on this statement.
Once you have a sigil, prepare you candle.
- If you are using a flameless candle or flashlight, cut a piece of paper to a size that will wrap neatly around the candle. Draw your sigil on the paper and dress it with whatever herbs or oils you find fitting and then wrap the paper around the light source and fasten it with a bit of sacred tape.
- If you are using a wax candle, inscribe your sigil right into the candle itself, then oil the candle and roll it in herbs as you see fit before setting it into its holder.
As this is a drawing spell you should do your rolling of candles and paper toward you, not away from you.
Light your candle stating your intention out loud and then place it in the window just before moonrise so that it stays there overnight under the light of the Libra full moon.
Once you’ve completed your spell, any leftover components should be kept nearby until it has done its work. Bits of paper or cardboard and soy or bees wax can safely be buried in the front garden or it can all be kept in a jar under your bed or on your altar. Remember that it should be near the front of the house as you are inviting in.
