It is easy to affect the physical world. If you pick up a glass, you will have changed the glass, the surface upon which it was sitting, and the surrounding air. Take a sip and you will change the quantity of water in the glass. You may not understand all the mechanics behind picking up a glass; the pressure of your fingers, the nerve and muscle responses inside your hand, the air particles surrounding the glass, the gravity affecting the whole situation, but you have complete faith that you can reach out and pick up that glass. So much faith that you can do so without putting much thought into it.
Anyone can Learn Magick
No one is born knowing how to pick up a glass, or how to drink water from it. You did not even know at birth that you could do so. First, you discover your hands, you explore them, and then you practice using them. You dropped things, broke them, dribbled water down your face, and made a mess of things. Your parents may have provided you with a special cup for practice, with easily gripped handles or a special lid and you did your very best to make a mess of that too. Then finally, you knew, how to drink a glass of water. Likely no one, yourself or your parents, could pinpoint the moment that happened and it was as if you’d always done it. You might still drop the occasional glass, or spill the occasional drink down your front, but this does not negatively affect your ability to do it right the next time. Even if you were born without the usually assumed physical equipment, you eventually learn how to get drinks inside you, whether you use special equipment or a different part of your anatomy to operate the glass or require the assistance of a third party to make it happen. And to you, this is the normal way.
Magic also takes time to learn. Whether you practice magick in the “usual” way, with or without special tools, with or without the assistance of a spiritual group or coven, spiritual or divine assistance and you will make many mistakes and messes along the way. But if you are willing to take the time to explore, experiment, and practice, you can, one day, perform magical workings and cast spells just as easily as if you were born doing it. And yes, you’ll make a mess of it sometimes.
What is Magick?
While defining magick is an article all its own, what it comes down to is simply using spiritual means to affect the physical world. While many people deny that this is possible, we use physical means to affect the spiritual, emotional, and mental all the time. No one can deny that physical objects, such as a cool glass of iced tea or a hot cup of coffee, properly applied, can have dramatic effects on the psyche. A glass of wine in a ceremonial setting can have a similar effect on the spiritual. Likewise, the mental and spiritual can have powerful effects on the physical as well as each other.
Magick and Energy
The reason the physical, mental, and spiritual affect one another so profoundly is that they are all made of the same thing: Energy. Matter is formed of energy and your mental processes are formed by chemical reactions and electronic impulses. Everything has and is energy. Energy is life. You may choose to identify this energy as your spirit, soul, aura, electricity, or simply your energy field. We can alter the nature, “vibration”, flavor, or personality of our energy through the power of thought and directed emotion.
Those non-living things, such as rocks, are also formed of energy but lack the consciousness to alter that energy, so they have static personalities. This is why you may hear so much about certain types of crystals being good for various specific energetic applications. As most of your personal energy is tied up in mundane things, like making sure your heart keeps beating, most of a rock’s energy is tied up in making it what it is. However, both you and the rock have a certain amount of excess energy that surrounds you, making up your aura or energy field. Unlike a rock, you have the consciousness and creativity required to use this excess energy to command your body and mind into action to change not only your physical appearance and your physical surroundings at will but also the manifestation of your own spiritual energy. I will teach you how to do this, as well as how to harness the energy in other objects, like rocks, and how to tell which objects will be most useful to you in your own magical work.
Your spiritual energy ebbs and flows and mingles with the spiritual energy of those people and things you encounter every day. In hectic moments this energy can scatter, leaving you drained and in moments of excitement you may be bursting with so much energy that you find it impossible to concentrate. Using a variety of techniques, you can control this ebb and flow and you can harness it to achieve your goals. From these pages, you will learn how to manage this ebb and flow of energy to ensure that you never feel drained or jumpy- unless you want to. You will also learn how to focus your energy on certain goals and “aim” it at specific targets. This is what we mean by casting spells.
Many Paths to Magick
There are countless magickal traditions and countless ways to bring about energetic change. Most spellwork uses a variety of methods to bring about change.
The most well-known spellcasting techniques involve gathering items that correspond to certain energies and performing ceremonies, prayers, and rituals with them. These items may be gathered together, carried on the person, or buried nearby. Or a practitioner of magick may simply use these items to help “set the mood” for their own energetic transformation as they raise energy and send it out into the world to achieve their goal.
Some accomplish their work by bonding with and calling upon spirits, deities, ancestors and other non-corporeal beings. These beings are purely energetic beings and so have a direct line on magick. Some consider them to be merely aspects of our own psyches, tools to help us flavor our energy before sending it out into the world while others consider these beings to be living entities with opinions and moods. Obviously, the way they are viewed will inform how they are approached.
Magic can also be accomplished by sending your own consciousness or energy body out from your physical body to perform various acts in this world and in the spirit world. This sort of work is referred to as Astral Work or trance work. It is accomplished by entering a trance-like state which allows you to separate your physical self from your consciousness. This is useful for delivering messages, placing suggestions, and discovering the answers to questions. You can also establish an Astral Temple in which to perform spellwork, performing magickal spells in your astral space using astral tools.
Though it sounds complicated, it is nothing more than the sum of several basic skills and knowledge that, once mastered, combine to make astral projection a rather simple feat. It is the mastery of these basic skills that may prove difficult, not because any one of them is particularly difficult, but because of the self-discipline it takes to repeatedly practice them until you can do them with ease. This site will guide you through very simple steps toward this goal. It is up to you to apply the self-discipline necessary to achieve mastery of these skills.
Learning Magick
We will begin by learning the basic techniques of focus, meditation, and visualization, which are valuable for myriad applications both magical and mundane. We will then build upon these techniques as we move on to more specifically magical skills. We will discuss how to protect yourself and others, how to control and make use of your time spent dreaming, how to connect with various nature spirits and ancestors to gain assistance with your work, and what natural items in your own environment can help you magically.
In addition to the basics, we’ll talk about some of the more common magical practices and communities you may encounter, ritual etiquette, and jargon. (Be sure to explore the glossary) We’ll also explore some of the more common spells and ritual elements you will run into and explore their symbolism and history.
It will be up to you to apply your own theology to them and the morality that goes with it.
Cautions
While I will not preach any specific theology here, I will caution you not to attempt to violate natural laws. You will not be able to alter the movement of the sun or moon, for example. Magic is not capable of defying nature. Magick is not supernatural, magick is nature and operates in accordance with natural laws. Attempting to violate these laws will at best accomplish nothing, and at worst, according to some magical theory, lead to unpleasant consequences.
It is also important to understand that casting a spell on a person means that you are sharing your spiritual energy with them whether the spell is a positive or a negative one. Thus, casting a spell on someone means that you are sharing your soul with him. For the duration of the spell, and possibly longer, you are intimately bonded to that person.
This has important implications. At the very least, it makes it easier for them to cast a spell on you. It also makes it easier for them to astrally travel to you, entering your dreams and otherwise spying on you, and possibly finding out things you’d rather they didn’t know. In the case of a magically inexperienced person, these dangers may not seem very relevant but we must be aware that even the untrained can get in a lucky jab, even an unintentional one. And this link can still keep a person in your thoughts and dreams long after they should have been let go.
As you go through this site and the exercises it contains, keep in mind the way spiritual energy behaves. You will discover more about it as you go. It is important that you understand these basic concepts before sending energy out into the world. A proper understanding of the way magic works will in turn give you a proper ethical foundation in which to work, your effectiveness and ensure your safety.
Do not feel that you need to purchase anything before you begin. While there are many tools that make magick more fun, all you really need are your imagination and your emotions. That being said; if you follow the links on this site to make your purchases, it will benefit me financially and I greatly appreciate it.
